인도와 네팔인들이 해외 취업 구인 공고를 보고 지원했다가 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁에 투입되는 사기 피해를 보고 있는 것으로 드러났다.

인도 중앙수사국(CBI)은 8일(현지시간) 성명을 내고 “뉴델리와 뭄바이 등 7개 도시에서 약 13곳을 동시 수색한 결과 고임금을 미끼로 젊은이들을 전쟁터로 보낸 인신매매 조직들을 적발했다”고 밝혔다. CBI에 따르면 이들 조직은 사회관계망서비스(SNS) 등을 통해 인도 젊은이들에게 고임금을 약속하며 “후방에서 러시아군을 돕는 역할을 할 것”이라고 유인했다. 하지만 실제로는 전투 훈련을 시키고 최전방에 투입했다.

CBI는 이날까지 인도 청년 35명이 이들에게 속아 전쟁에 참전했으며, 최소 두 명이 전장에서 사망한 것으로 집계했다. 인도 외무부는 이번 사태와 관련해 러시아 정부에 강력히 항의했다고 전했다.

영국 일간 가디언도 23세 인도인 헤밀 만구키야의 사연을 전날 소개했다. 그는 유튜브 구인 영상을 보고 전쟁과 관련 없는 보안 요원 직에 지원해 지난해 12월 집을 떠났다. 하지만 그는 전장에서 참호를 파고, 탄약을 나르고 소총과 기관총을 다뤄야 했다.

만구키야는 가족과의 통화에서 “생각한 일자리가 아니라 군사 훈련소를 거쳐 최전선으로 보내졌다”고 말했다. 지난달 말 갑자기 만구키야의 연락이 끊겼고, 가족들은 며칠 뒤 그가 우크라이나에서 미사일 공격으로 숨졌다는 통보를 받았다.
